Commenting on exit polls saying that Lee Jae-myung will be elected as South Korean president, Gareth Redmond-King, Head of International Programme at the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) said:

"After Canada and Australia, South Korea becomes the third G20 nation in as many months to vote in a pro-climate administration. President Lee’s commitments to phasing out coal, expand renewables, and restore nature adds to the global momentum towards net zero.

"While Trump is trying to hold back the transition, 85% of clean energy investment takes place outside the US and that’s where the real movement is. The risk here for the UK is in getting left behind in the race for clean technologies and maintaining growth in the net zero sector which last year grew three times faster than the economy as a whole."
